Become a Vital Farmer

Farming With Us

We began as a single farm. As we grew, we didn’t make our farm bigger — we found more like-minded farmers who put the welfare of their animals first. Today, approximately 300 family farms commit to our exacting standards and the pasture-raised practices that are best for hens and land. Pasture-raising puts the welfare of our animals at the heart of our business. We require our farmers to allot at least 108 square feet per hen, giving the girls plenty of room to roam and allowing the land enough time to rejuvenate naturally, without pesticides or herbicides. If you are interested in joining, please read through the following frequently asked questions and answers before applying.

FAQS

What is the pasture belt™?

The pasture belt is the U.S. region where pasture-raised eggs can be produced year-round. Each of our small family farms thrives in this region, those warmer-weather states where the winters are mild, and the girls can nosh on native grasses year-round. It’s not too hot and not too cold — perfect for our feathered friends to roam and graze in the sunshine.

What are the day-to-day requirements of a Vital Farms farmer?

Being a Vital Farms farmer requires managing to a higher standard for animal welfare and egg quality than any other producer. We require our farmers to be in their barn multiple times per day, continually monitoring the environment and working to ensure the barn and pasture environment are optimal for the bird’s health and wellbeing. Additionally, our farmers document almost every aspect of the environment to provide visibility into all aspects of the rearing environment and help us collaborate on how to continuously improve our systems.

What is the compensation for a Vital Farms farmer?

It is Vital Farms’ ongoing goal to offer our farmers industry-competitive compensation. Once an application is returned to us, we will reach out to you about a potential farmer meeting (should we be expanding in your region). This meeting will cover current compensation along with building and land requirements and start-up costs.

How much pasture land is required?

Our hens need a minimum of 108 square feet of pasture each, which requires at least 52 acres for 20,000 birds.

What type of land is required?

Our production method can take advantage of otherwise marginal land. We require good tree coverage and open areas with good grass cover. This provides the best combination for what the birds love to forage. For biosecurity reasons, pastures with year-round ponds or creeks, will not be considered as pasture for the birds.
